Bible verses where Jesus says he's sacrificing himself for our sin?

I'd like to know which words to quote when someone says that Jesus never actually stated that his death was going to ransom us all from Hell.
People have said that it was only Paul or the disciples who said this, not Jesus himself.
Those of you with red-letter Bibles, which verse is this?

On powerful indication of what happens to those who are the unrighteous:

The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matt 13:41-43

Now the trick is to figure out how to be among the righteous.

Mat 18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

There is a fascinating account of the judgement that begins here:
Mat 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory....

It's the separation of those who cared for the poor and downtrodden and those who didn't. As for those who didn't care for the poor and downtrodden: "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." Mat 25:46

But I think you're creating a false dichotomy between Christ's words and the writings of his followers. Christ's words are found primarily in the Gospels. But he did not write the gospels, his followers did. Everything there, including the "red letters", is something written by a follower -- it might be a quote, but it is related by someone else. Their interpretation of Jesus' words is as important as the quotes themselves, if you are going to believe the quotes; how can the quotes be trusted if you don't believe the rest of what they wrote?

Jesus did teach that he would be killed and rise again, saying "The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again." Mat 17:22,23
His death was no surprise to him. Neither was his resurrection.
