What will I be surprised to find out about a bar mitzvah?
What does a bar or bat mitzvah mean to a young Jew, are there a lot of preparations involved? How is this any different from a Catholic confirmation? Thanks
It depends on your synagogue and your congregation.
The truth is, when you turn 13, you become a bar mitzvah whether you have any special ceremony or not. All the term "bar mitzvah" means is that you are considered to have reached adulthood according to Jewish law, and every mitzvah (commandment) that you do or refuse to do from that point on counts for or against you, instead of your parents. That your soul is officially your own.
Because you are officially "legally" (according to Jewish law) allowed to do certain practices, many bar mitzvah services include the boy (or girl) taking part in rituals, in the same way that many Americans celebrate their 21st birthday by going to a bar. So a bar mitzvah will often lead services, chant the Torah and/or Haftorah portions, put on tefillin (if it's a weekday), and/or learn a tractate of the Talmud. But none of these things are necessary - you are still considered a bar mitzvah even if you do none of them (I suppose that would be what you might find surprising
. However, the more you do, the more merit you are considered to have achieved, in taking your position of responsibility in the congregation seriously.
I don't believe that it has anything in common with Confirmation, other than the fact that you are considered a full-fledged member of the congregation afterwards. In fact, many Hebrew schools offer confirmation classes after bar and bat mitzvah and hold something also called Confirmation, which is basically celebrating a commitment to further Jewish education.

Here is a confirmation preparation program that goes right to the source. It teaches about the Rite itself because the authors believe that the liturgy is the primary source of catechesis. The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all the Churchs power flows, see Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy, 10... |
